In what could mark a major diplomatic breakthrough, US President Donald Trump announced Monday (local time) he will arrange face-to-face talks between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents to help end the war in Ukraine.
“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin ,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, referring to his own White House discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and seven other European leaders.
"I began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and Zelenskyy," he said.
The US leader added that the Putin-Zelenskyy talks would be followed by a trilateral summit involving himself and his two counterparts.
Vice president JD Vance, secretary of state Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff are coordinating with Moscow and Kyiv in this regard, he added.
Putin 'willing' to meet Zelenskyy
According to a source, during his meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders, Trump took a small break to call Putin.
“Putin told Trump of his readiness to meet Zelenskyy,” the Associated Press quoted the source as saying.
On August 15, Trump hosted Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss the conflict that has been ongoing since February 2022.
Trump's 'good meeting' with Zelenskyy, European leaders
On Monday, Trump hosted Zelenskyy, British PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italy's Giorgia Meloni, German chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finland President Alexander Stubb, Nato chief Mark Rutte, and European Commission head Ursula von der Loyen.
According to Trump, the participants discussed "security guarantees" for Ukraine, along with guarantees to be provided by European nations, in coordination with the United States.
