WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from We Were Liars.
We Were Liars has been given the go ahead for a second season three months after the YA drama dropped on Prime Video.
Based on author E Lockhart's best-selling novel of the same name, We Were Liars revolved around American royalty, the Sinclair family, known for their good looks, old money and close bond.
But a mysterious accident changes Cadence Sinclair's (played by Emily Alyn Lind) life forever as everyone, including her tight inner circle, seems to have something to hide.
The story of the Sinclair family is not quite over yet though with Prime Video renewing We Were Liars for a second season with Head of US SVoD TV Development and Series labelling it a "must-watch".
The renewal hasn't come as too much of a surprise to book lovers though who were well aware that Lockhart published her sequel novel Family of Liars in 2022.
Lockhart has since given some major clues on what the second season is going to be about, telling Deadline: "If you watch We Were Liars all the way til the end and you watch the little coda, you can see that that coda tips to the start of Family of Liars.
"We have not forgotten about what's going on with Johnny and Carrie."
Carrie (Mamie Gummer) who has struggled with addiction throughout her life, is seen in the finale's few moments taking some medication out of tin.
She then turns around to see what appears to be the ghost of her late son Johnny (Joseph Zada) sitting cross-legged on the kitchen counter.
Carrie says: "I thought you left", to which he ominously replies: "I don't think I can."
So it seems that Carrie's visions of Johnny could continue into the next series.
When asked what a second season could look like, co-showrunner Julie Plec shared that it would "theoretically" take fans "deeper into the moms' lives as well and add another generation to the story".
This strongly indicates that fans are right in the fact that We Were Liars season two will be based on Lockhart's novel Family of Liars.
Lockhart herself further teased: [Carina Adly] MacKenzie and [Julie] Plec have big, big plans for season two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen - and a lot of surprises as well."
We Were Liars is available to watch on Prime Video.
