Patios can rapidly become grimy during summer since we're spending increased time outdoors, but they can also become a breeding ground for moss and algae which can prove challenging to eliminate. Moss and algae are typically more prevalent during cooler months, but British summers are exceptionally humid which can cause these plant-like organisms to adhere stubbornly to outdoor surfaces, reports the Express.
What makes these spongy green nuisances particularly irritating is that they require just one minuscule spore to continue regenerating, so you'll need to persistently scrub them away to maintain a pristine patio. Nevertheless, specialists at Infinite Paving have revealed there's actually a remarkably straightforward method to eliminate both moss and algae and prevent regrowth, requiring only a small amount of bicarbonate of soda.
They explained: "One very unconventional yet very effective way of getting rid of unwanted paving weeds is by using bicarbonate of soda.
"When eradicating moss from your garden, bicarbonate of soda, or baking soda, is a very powerful substance that will get rid of the moss in no time."
Bicarbonate of soda may appear basic, but individuals frequently undervalue its effectiveness for cleaning numerous areas throughout the household, and it can destroy both moss and algae.
Moss and algae can only thrive in acidic conditions, but bicarbonate of soda is an alkaline substance, so will elevate the pH level on surfaces to prevent their growth.
Bicarbonate of soda is also inherently absorbent and will draw all moisture from a patio, which dehydrates them and makes survival considerably more difficult. This is one of the simplest methods to eradicate moss and algae, whilst also ensuring your patio remains dry and less acidic, thus preventing their regrowth for the remainder of the summer.
All you need to do is wait for a sunny day, then give your patio a thorough sweep to help loosen the stains initially. Next, liberally sprinkle dry baking soda on any areas of your patio that are plagued by moss or algae.
Allow the baking soda to sit undisturbed so it can dry them out and increase the pH level. This process typically takes between 24 to 48 hours.
If you like, you can continue to apply baking soda during this period.
You'll know it has been effective when the moss or algae starts to turn brown, indicating it is dying.
Once it has fully dried up, the moss or algae should be easy to remove by sweeping it away with a broom. Rinse your patio with hot water, and it should remain clean and free from stains for a significantly longer period.
