A man "took a risk" after opting for a dramatic redesign of his "charmless" kitchen, which had only recently been spruced up. Many people hope to snap up a home which has been subject to a renovation, believing they're getting a property that's move-in ready - with no need for a dramatic course of DIY action.
Unfortunately, the reality can prove very different. Some homeowners learn the properties they've scrimped and saved for have been stripped of their character in favour of a clean, fuss-free aesthetic. This was the case for Dawson, who moved into a 1970s home that had been "flipped".
Flipping is a common practice which sees people snap up properties in need of a period of renovation, then selling them for profit after making some improvements to its appearance. Typically, they're put back on the market within a year of being "flipped" so the renovator can take their profits and move on.
Dawson has been documenting his own DIY journey on TikTok, where he regularly posts videos detailing the transformations he's made to his home so far.
In a recent video, he showcased his kitchen - and the work he's put into it in a bid to restore some "charm" and "character" to the room.
Narrating over the top of the clip, Dawson explained: "This is what my kitchen looked like two years ago and I cannot wait to show you what it looks like now.
"My house was previously owned by a flipper who just took all of the charm out of it by painting the entire kitchen grey, so it's been my life mission the last couple of months to bring a little bit more character and charm back into the space."
The kitchen had been kitted out with old, grey kitchen cupboards which he has since removed in favour of stylish walnut-coloured wooden units, with stylish gold handles and cabinetry.
Recently, Dawson made the decision to include a tiled backsplash in a dark, olive green colour. A floating shelf is positioned above one wall of units, but the DIY-enthusiast decided to tile above the shelf and continue right up to the ceiling to create a more dramatic and opulent appearance.
He also added lighting to help ensure the space remains bright, despite the dark tiles.
In the caption accompanying the clip, he penned: "I DID IT. I've been working SO hard to install this backsplash over the last week and I'm so so grateful for all your encouragement and advice along the way! What do you think? Did I make the right call?"
In the comments section, people were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: "That green tile is SO good it hurts."
Another said: "I was skeptical, but the lights prevent it from looking too dark."
One person, claiming to be an interior designer, supported Dawson's choice and added: "As an interior designer I always bring it to the ceiling."
Someone else commented: "I absolutely love it. I am glad you didn't do everything white. I cannot stand white everything."
Another person shared: "I'm glad you took the risk!"
Of his decision to get rid of the grey, one TikTok user said: "The world is healing."
Someone else said: "It's so beautiful I'm so jealous."
