British duo crash out of Wimbledon as wildcard entries sent packing in double-quick time

British duo Johannus Monday and George Loffhagen couldn't keep the opening day magic going, after crashing out in the first round.

Monday suffered a miserable Tuesday, going down to a straight sets defeat to American Tommy Paul on Court Three. Hull-born Monday, 22, received a wild card for both the Wimbledon men's singles and doubles.

But he came up against a significantly more experienced rival in the shape of 28-year-old Paul, who is ranked 13th in the world and reached the quarter-final of the Championships last year.

Paul's passage to the second round was fairly straightforward, and it took him just an hour and 43 minutes to take down the 6ft 6in Monday 6-4 6-4 6-2.

There was more misery for fellow Brit Loffhagen. The 24-year-old came into the tournament with a career-high world ranking of 293.

And he made a sensational start, taking the first set 6-2 to threaten an upset against Pedro Martinez. But despite firing down 16 aces in the match, Loffhagen had no answer to the superior skills of the Spaniard, who won the next three sets to triumph 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
