A seven-year-old girl was left with a “hole in her leg” and a fear of red cars after being seriously injured in a hit and run.
Peyton Reardon was playing outside with her friends when a car drove into her in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in April. Video footage shows the driverleaving the scene without checking on the child.
Peyton was left unable to walk after the incident, and her mother, Kylie Anne, said she no longer plays outside. Kylie, 28, said: "She does not play out anymore. At the time she kept saying ‘mummy, it wasn’t my fault, I checked left and right’, I think she thought she was going to get told off initially.”

Peyton is only just learning how to walk again and still has “a long way to go”, her mum said. "Whenever you are walking near roadsides, she panics. Any red car that comes near her too, she is going under psychology for that."
Matthew Greenway admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and failing to stop after the accident. He was handed a six-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, as well as a nine-month driving disqualification. Greenway was also given court costs of £110, and a rehabilitation order at Bradford Magistrates Court.
After taking off her daughter’s tights, Kylie saw a “hole in her leg”. She said of the driver: “I’m very disgusted that he stopped twice and still then drove off the third time. He was fully aware she was injured in that road and just left a child.”
Peyton was left with a broken fibula and tibia, and had to undergo two rounds of surgery. She was expected to be unable to walk for months, with her mother explaining: "She (Payton) has to have follow ups until she is between 16 and 19, so it is going to be a lot outstanding mentally and physically."
She added: "It was such an isolated injury, so I did not think it would be such a lengthy process. It is wild that she had a tibia, fibula, and growth plate injury. You would not have thought all of those bones would have been broken."
Kylie said that the incident shows how “dangerous and powerful" cars can be, even at 20mph, and said she was pleased that the driver received a ban. "Any outcome is a good outcome, and at least he came forward in the end. I am glad that he got disqualified. Hopefully that will deter him from any further incidents."
She added: "I don't go 20mph, I go 10mph because it is a residential street. It is clear that there are going to be children about. Always be aware in these residential areas."
