Ride-hailing unicorn Rapido has launched a new service to allow users to directly book Delhi Metro tickets on its app through Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) integration.
The ride-hailing giant has signed a strategic partnership with the ONDC and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to roll out the new feature. The offering is now live and allows users to plan and pay for metro travel without switching platforms to recharge their cards or buy tokens.
Besides ticketing, the company also announced new last-mile transit offerings in partnership with DMRC. These include designated pick-up and drop-off points at select stations, dedicated pick-up zones for women, and “discounts” on metro tickets booked via Rapido app.
The company also said that it has rolled out a flat INR 25 fare on Rapido bike rides to metro stations within a 3 km radius.
Rapido plans to roll out these offerings across the Delhi metro network in phases. Notably, the ride-hailing major debuted many of these features for Chennai Metro in early 2024 and is also mulling launching such features on the Bengaluru Metro network.
The development comes a month after Uber partnered with the ONDC to offer metro ticketing facility via its app.
Notably, more and more aggregator platforms are moving in the direction of super apps via ONDC integration. Recently, Uber announced plans to launch B2B logistics services through the state-backed network.
Meanwhile, Ola Consumer is leveraging ONDC for food and grocery orders. It’s already one of the top platforms for food delivery on ONDC in the cities where it is live, and it plans to expand across India in the near future.
Rapido Goes All OutThe partnership with ONDC comes at a time when Rapido has been on an expansion spree. It has also entered the food delivery segment with ‘Ownly’ to take on giants like Swiggy and Zomato.
The offering aims to disrupt the market by offering a zero-commission model for restaurants, charging only a fixed delivery fee per order (INR 10 to INR 25), and promising transparent pricing for customers, with no extra platform or packaging charges.
With regards to its core offering, the ride-hailing unicorn claims to be the market leader in bike taxis with 70% market share, and accounts for 40% share in the auto rides segment. On the financial front, it claims to have nearly doubled its revenue YoY in FY25, likely breaching the INR 1,000 Cr mark. It is also gunning for profitability in FY26.
