Mumbai Monsoon Fury: Torrential Downpour Floods City, 2 Killed In Vikhroli Landslide

Send Push

After weeks of dry spell, Mumbai was lashed by torrential rain from Friday night into Saturday, with some areas recording more than 200 mm of rainfall in just five hours. The heavy downpour triggered waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupted railway services, and caused a landslide in Vikhroli Parksite that killed two people and injured two others. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai on Sunday.

Suburbs Drenched With Over 200 mm Rain

Between 11 PM Friday and 5 AM Saturday, Mumbai’s suburbs bore the brunt of the deluge. Western suburbs Marol Fire Station recorded 216 mm, Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz 213 mm, and Chakala in Andheri East 204 mm. While in Eastern suburbs Vikhroli’s Tagore Nagar Municipal School logged 213 mm, while nearby offices reported 212 mm. Ghatkopar’s N Ward Office and Ramabai Ambedkar School recorded 204 mm and inPratiksha Nagar in Sion saw the highest with 144 mm.

Waterlogging Cripples Key Junctions

Overnight rain left several areas inundated, including Kings Circle, Gandhi Market, Andheri Subway, and Milan Subway. Flooding brought traffic to a standstill in Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Andheri, Malad, and Goregaon.
Mumbai’s suburban train services on both Central and Western lines were affected by water on tracks, though disruption was limited as many stayed home during the three-day festival break and Dahi Handi celebrations.

Civic Response Under Scanner

Despite flooding, local activists flagged lapses. “The Aarey underpass on Marol Maroshi Road was completely flooded and impassable. No BMC or emergency teams were seen on site, posing safety risks,” said Godfrey Pimenta, founder of Watchdog Foundation.

BMC on High Alert

Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani monitored the situation from the Disaster Management Cell. Assistant municipal commissioners and field staff were deployed on ground, with dewatering pumps kept on standby at waterlogging-prone spots.
Between 8 AM and 5:30 PM Saturday, the island city recorded 54.59 mm of rain, western suburbs 39 mm, and eastern suburbs 19.37 mm.

Multiple Incidents Reported

Heavy showers triggered four short circuits, 19 tree-fall incidents, and five wall collapses across the city. Fortunately, no injuries were reported apart from the Vikhroli landslide.
