Taylor Swift just made our day brighter by unveiling her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, along with its release date, and look what she made the fans do! They’re going gaga over it for all the right reasons. In addition to this, she recently appeared on the New Heights podcast with boyfriend Travis Kelce, where she shared several personal insights. Taylor also opened up about how she reclaimed the master recordings of her music.
Taylor Swift reveals how she bought back the master recordings
After years of fighting to own her original work, on May 30, this year, Taylor Swift officially bought back the rights to the master recordings of her first six albums. During the podcast, as reported by AP, the Grammy-winning singer revealed that instead of involving a legal team or managers for the negotiations with Shamrock Capital, she sent her “mom and brother”, Andrea and Austin Swift, to handle the talks. Calling them her long-time business partners, she said their deep emotional connection to the music made them the best people for the job.
“They were able to convey all the times we’ve tried to buy [the masters], all the times it’s fallen through,” she explained.
Reclaiming the rights to her music has been a goal since her teenage years, with Swift revealing that she had been saving up for years with this exact purpose in mind. For her, this was never a financial decision, but an intensely personal one. “These are my handwritten diary entries from my whole life,” she said, referring to her catalog. “My artwork, everything that I’ve ever done, is in this catalog.”
The purchase, which reportedly happened in May for an undisclosed nine-figure sum, included not only the master recordings but also the visuals tied to her first six albums. Despite the massive financial scale of the deal, Taylor said it was the emotional weight that truly overwhelmed her.
She recalled receiving the news via a phone call from her mother while in Kansas City, months after the Super Bowl. “She was like, ‘You got your music,’ and I literally hit the floor,” Swift said.
How Travis Kelce reacted to the huge news?
Overcome with emotion, she broke down and rushed to share the moment with her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce. Taylor Swift walked into another room where Travis Kelce was casually playing video games, unaware of what had just happened. Trying to stay composed, she attempted to tell him the news “in a normal way,” but broke down emotionally the moment she started speaking. Kelce immediately dropped his controller and embraced her, as she began sobbing uncontrollably. The NFL star later admitted he was also moved to tears, describing Swift as “dead weight” in his arms from the overwhelming emotions they both felt.
Alongside this, the Blank Space singer also announced her next chapter: a brand-new album titled The Life of a Showgirl, set to release on October 3. It will be her first full-length project since regaining her masters and is expected to talk about the themes of resilience, creativity, and transformation.
