The name Helen needs no introduction. Known as one of the most prolific and iconic dancers in Bollywood, Helen has been a part of many chartbusters, such as ‘Piya Tu,’ ‘Yeh Mera Dil,’ ‘Mehbooba,’ etc. In a candid chat with Arbaaz Khan in his podcast The Invincibles, Helen talked about her halcyon days and her bond with the Khan family.

Helen admitted that she was very “lucky” to be able to dance till the age of 42. She also reminisced about how the onscreen image of heroines changed gradually and leading ladies slowly began to emulate the ‘vamps’ in their clothing. “Earlier they only used to wear saris and maang tikas. But slowly they began to do what I would do,” she recalled.

When quizzed if she was insecure about these developments, Helen said she accepted the change and started doing stage shows for bread and butter.

On Her Relationship With Salim Khan

Describing Salim Khan as a “generous, just, fair, and compassionate person,” Helen recalled how the iconic screenplay writer must have heard about her legal troubles and decided to help her out. “He must have heard me going through court cases, so he gave me a role in Imaan Dharam, Dostana, Don... we became friends…”

She revealed she used to come over to his house often, and their friendship gradually turned into love.

She admitted things were tough for Saleem’s first wife, Salma, and stated that while she loved Salim, she never wanted to break the family apart. “I never ever wanted a separation from the family. I would never have stayed on; I couldn't take that. A lot of credit goes to Mom. She must have gone through a lot that time. Destiny brought me close to all of you…” she said.

Helen and Salim tied the knot in 1981. Till today, Helen is close to all of her stepchildren.
