Indian Economy: As the income of the people has increased, the prices of things have also increased. Once a rupee used to cover the expenses of the whole week, and now even 1000 rupees falls short.
Indian Economy: Our country became independent on 15 August 1947, and today it is the fourth largest economy in the world. India's nominal GDP has crossed the figure of 4 trillion dollars. However, during this time, the prices of things have changed a lot. If we talk about currency, then coins like anna, pice, and pi, which were in circulation in 1947, are not used today. Till the year 2025, only the coin of 50 paise remained a legal tender with some conditions.
1 rupee used to cover the whole week
Today India is going to celebrate its 79th Independence Day. The prices of things have changed a lot in these many years. Today, you can hardly buy anything for 1 rupee. On the other hand, in that era of 1947, people used to spend the whole week in 1 rupee. During that time, oil was available for 12 paise and pure ghee for just 2.5 rupees per kg. Sugar could be bought for 40 paise per kg, potatoes for 25 paise and several kg of wheat for one rupee. You can understand how much the situation has changed today. As the income of people has increased, the prices of things have also increased.
The price of 10 grams of gold is less than 100 rupees
There was a time in 1947 when the price of 10 grams of gold used to be around 88 rupees. Today gold has crossed 1 lakh rupees. After the country became independent, gold imports gradually started decreasing to manage both the economy and foreign exchange reserves. This affected both supply and demand. In the 1990s, the price of gold fluctuated due to economic liberalization, inflation and changes in demand patterns. Apart from this, geopolitical tensions and currency valuations also affected the prices.
Flight tickets were also less than Rs 200
You will be surprised to know that in those days the price of petrol was only 27 paise per liter. The fare for a flight from Delhi to Mumbai used to be around Rs 140. During that time, Air India was the only airline that started its services in 1936, that too with just one route. Now you can imagine how much things have changed in the last 79 years.
